Family Sponsorship
Get professional advice and dedicated support to sponsor your husband, wife, or partner.
Canada places a high priority on family reunification. Under the Family Class, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their close family members, including spouses, partners, dependent children, parents, and grandparents.
Types of Family Sponsorship
Spousal Sponsorship
Sponsors who are married or in a common-law relationship (living together in a marriage-like relationship for at least one year) can sponsor their spouse for permanent residence.
Applicants can apply under one of two streams, Inland or Outland Sponsorship. Inland Sponsorship is the immigration stream for spouses who are already in Canada. Under this stream the sponsored person can also apply for a work permit which allows them to work while their application is in process. Outland Sponsorship is the immigration stream for spouses who will remain outside Canada during processing of the application.
Sponsors and applicants interested in spousal sponsorship can see our Spousal Sponsorship page for further details.
Dependent Child Sponsorship
A dependent child can be sponsored by their biological or adopted parents. The definition of dependent child, is:
- Less than 22 years old, and not married or in a common-law relationship, or
- 22 years or older, and has depended substantially on the financial support of the parent before age 22, and is unable to support themselves due to a physical or mental condition
Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship
Parents and Grandparents can be sponsored through the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP).
Sponsors need to meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) requirements. The MNI is based on the size of the family, and needs to be met in the previous three years. Both the sponsor and a co-signer can combine their incomes to meet this requirement.
Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents
An alternative to Parent and Grandparent sponsorship is the Super Visa Program. A Super Visa is a multiple entry visa which is valid for up to 10 years. It allows the holder to stay in Canada for up to 2 years at time. It is not a pathway to permanent residence, but allows the holder to visit or live with family at their convenience.
A Super Visa applicant needs to meet the general requirements for a Visitor Visa (also known as a Temporary Resident Visa) as well as carry private health insurance for at least one year. The applicant’s children (the sponsors) also need to demonstrate a minimum income that is sufficient to support the applicant.
