Visitor Visa Types
Multiple Entry
Multiple entry visas are issued for up to 10 years, or to the expiry date of your passport. You can enter Canada as many times as you want during the validity period. The maximum period of stay for each visit is 6 months from the date of arrival. However, it is possible to extend your legal stay beyond 6 months, by making an application while inside Canada.
Single Entry
Single entry visas allow for a single entry to Canada.
Visitor Visa Eligibility and Uses
To be eligible for a Visitor Visa, the applicant must:
- Prove they have sufficient funds to pay for the visit and return to their home country
- Demonstrate sufficient ties to their home country
- Be in good health (a medical exam may be required)
Travel/Vacation
Applicants may come to Canada for short or long vacation periods.
Family Visit
Applicants can obtain a visitor visa in order to visit family members. Parents and Grandparents of Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents can also apply for a Super Visa which allows for stays in Canada of up to 2 years at a time.
Business Visit
Applicants may enter for the purpose of business, such as for meetings or conferences. It is important that a visitor visa will not give the holder the right to work - for this a Work Permit is needed.
Short-Term Studies
Applicants who would like to complete a study program of less than 6 months need to obtain a Visitor Visa. For programs of 6 months or more, a Study Permit is also required.
Long-Term Stay
Once inside Canada, a visitor is able to extend their stay beyond 6 months by applying for a Visitor Record. They are also able to apply for a Study Permit, Work Permit, or Permanent Residence, and stay in Canada while the application is processed.
